Dr. Joel Ackerman is a Scoliosis Clinician and Chiropractor who looks after patients in our ScoliCare Sydney South Clinic.
- What attracted you to your role at ScoliCare?
For me it doesn’t get much better than being able to work for a company that is leading in its field, being in the front line of research and the development of Scoliosis treatment. For the first time in my career, I am looking forward to Mondays.
- What have been some of the common challenges you have seen in patients with scoliosis?
One of the more common challenges I see in practice is the psychological side of scoliosis, due to the severe lack of information or misinformation by the time patients get to us they’re often left frustrated, confused, or even upset?, thinking ‘Why me?’
- Explain how you help patients to overcome these challenges.
This is why a huge part of our roles here at ScoliCare is education, I aim to give patients the knowledge and tools to navigate this challenge and let them know they can lead a completely normal life with scoliosis. Reassuring and motivating patients is also a big part of my job, Scoliosis treatment isn’t always easy, but it is important to stick with it and not get disheartened.
- Why did you decide to work in the area of scoliosis?
To put it simply, I like results, making big changes in people’s lives, and being able to quantify them. Early on in my career, I got into structural rehabilitation through Chiropractic Biophysics and various functional rehabilitation techniques, I found Scoliosis the most challenging and had limited results working with these patients, this is where my interest came from and I started looking for solutions.
