ScoliBalance®
Physiotherapeutic Scoliosis-Specific Exercise (PSSE) Program
ScoliBalance® is a physiotherapeutic scoliosis-specific exercise (PSSE) program designed to support the management of scoliosis and kyphosis across children, adolescents, and adults.
Developed by Dr.Jeb McAviney, in collaboration with a multidisciplinary clinical team including Rose Mirenzi and Rebecca Phillips, the program integrates established PSSE methodologies (including SEAS and Schroth-based approaches) into a clinically practical and patient-centred framework.
Delivered exclusively through ScoliCare Clinics and certified providers, ScoliBalance® applies a structured, evidence-informed approach to exercise rehabilitation.
Each program is individually prescribed based on the patient’s curve type, clinical presentation, and treatment goals, supporting a personalised and outcomes-focused approach to care.
Ongoing clinical application, research collaboration, and provider training ensure consistency and alignment with current best practice.
The ScoliBalance Approach
ScoliBalance builds on the foundation of other PSSE programs focusing on aspects that are most effective and achievable for patients to learn and implement. ScoliBalance Providers are trained to teach the patient a scoliosis specific 3D posture correction (ScoliCorrection) that positions the patient’s spine in the straightest possible alignment. From there the patient is taught specific ScoliExercises whereby the aim is to hold their ScoliCorrections while they perform the exercises.
As the patient becomes more familiar with the program they are taught to integrate the ScoliCorrection into their activities of daily living (1). In doing so, the body is trained to subconsciously hold the ScoliCorrection helping to reduce or stabilise the scoliosis curve.
- The patient is provided with an individualised scoliosis specific exercise program based on their curve type and postural characteristics that also addresses any relevant functional weaknesses. The patient learns this program in-clinic and then practices at home between clinic appointments
- The program often uses a ScoliRoll (for scoliosis) or Denneroll (for hyperkyphosis) to enhance the correction to the spine and posture. The use of such devices is demonstrated to the patient, should they be prescribed
- ScoliBalance is delivered in accordance with the SOSORT** guidelines (1).
Why ScoliBalance Matters in Clinical Care
Exercise-based rehabilitation plays an important role in modern scoliosis management. When delivered within a structured and individualised framework, PSSE programs can support postural correction, improve function, and assist in reducing the risk of curve progression.
ScoliBalance® is designed to:
- Support three-dimensional postural correction
- Improve muscular balance and spinal stability
- Enhance patient awareness and self-correction strategies
- Complement bracing interventions where indicated
- Improve functional outcomes and quality of life
The program aligns with recognised SOSORT guidelines, supporting its role within evidence-based, multidisciplinary scoliosis care.
The ScoliBalance Approach
ScoliBalance® follows a structured clinical framework focused on correction, integration, and progression.

3D Postural Correction (ScoliCorrection)
Patients are guided to achieve their optimal spinal alignment through a personalised three-dimensional correction strategy. This forms the foundation of all exercise and rehabilitation.

Targeted Exercise Prescription (ScoliExercises)
Patients perform scoliosis-specific exercises while maintaining their corrected posture. Programs are tailored to individual curve patterns, muscular imbalances, and functional needs.

Integration into Daily Function
As patients progress, corrective strategies are integrated into activities of daily living, supporting long-term carryover and neuromuscular adaptation.

Adjunctive Tools & Techniques
Where appropriate, tools such as the ScoliRoll or Denneroll may be incorporated to support postural correction and enhance outcomes.
How Can ScoliBalance Help?
ScoliBalance® can be applied across a range of patient presentations:

Early & Mild Curves (<20°)
May assist in reducing the risk of progression and improving postural alignment in growing patients.

Non-Progressive Curves
Supports posture, function, and symptom management in adolescents and young adults where bracing is not indicated.

In Combination with Bracing
ScoliBalance® complements corrective bracing by:
- Supporting muscular endurance
- Enhancing spinal flexibility
- Reinforcing corrective postural strategies

Adult & Degenerative Scoliosis
May assist in:
- Reducing pain
- Improving posture and balance
- Enhancing functional capacity
- Reducing fall risk in older adults
Delivered by Certified Professionals
ScoliBalance® is delivered by trained and certified providers across all ScoliCare Clinics and a select network of certified healthcare professionals, ensuring consistency in assessment, exercise prescription, and progression.
Patients are guided through a structured pathway that includes:
- In-clinic instruction and supervised learning
- Individualised home exercise programs
- Ongoing clinical review and progression
Certified providers undergo structured training, practical assessment, and ongoing clinical support, ensuring consistent application of the program and high standards of patient care.
This approach supports adherence, accuracy of technique, and long-term outcomes.
For Health Professionals
