Scoliosis Awareness Month – Why Does it Matter?

Scoliosis Awareness Month – Why Does it Matter?

Scoliosis is a condition that affects millions of people worldwide.  It’s likely that you might have heard about scoliosis, or know someone with it, but you might not fully understand what it is, and who it can affect.

Scoliosis Awareness Month, which takes place each June, seeks to raise awareness about scoliosis. It’s also an opportunity to provide education about the condition to promote early detection and treatment.

Here’s why we think Scoliosis Awareness Month really matters.

Encouraging Understanding

Many people may not be familiar with scoliosis until it affects them or someone they know. Scoliosis Awareness Month provides a platform to share information about who can be affected, the signs and symptoms to look out for and where to seek help if you do notice something unusual.

By spreading knowledge and understanding, people are more likely to be able to identify the signs and symptoms early on in friends and family. This empowers people to take action and seek prompt treatment.

An increase in understanding can also help in the case of a diagnosis. Knowing key information beforehand can help people feel more comfortable and make informed decisions about their care.

More Than Just a Curve

Scoliosis can have an impact on an individual’s quality of life. People can experience discomfort, pain and be self-conscious about their body appearance and posture.

Over June, we encourage everyone to share their experiences and connect with others who may be on a similar path. Raising awareness and increasing understanding about scoliosis can help reduce the stigma associated with the condition and promote acceptance and inclusion.

To acknowledge Scoliosis Awareness Month, we’ve asked some patients to share their stories with us. These stories are shared with the hope of providing comfort, inspiration, and hope to others who may be facing similar challenges. You can watch their stories here.

Early Detection and Early Intervention

Awareness month provides an opportunity for us to raise awareness about the importance of early detection and treatment. With early detection, many cases can be managed through non-surgical conservative treatment such as bracing or specific exercise rehabilitation. Early detection and intervention can help prevent the progression of the condition and reduce the need for more invasive treatments such as surgery.

Using the free ScoliScreen in browser app is an easy way to check for signs of scoliosis in children and loved ones. Regular checks of children and other family members at home help ensure any signs are noticed as early as possible. Anything unusual can then be investigated.

You are not Alone

Finally, the month serves as a reminder that individuals with scoliosis are not alone. Scoliosis can be a challenging condition to manage, but with the right treatment and support, individuals can lead healthy, active and fulfilling lives.

Over June, we’re really pleased to be launching our online community group, ScoliConnect, providing peer support for patients undergoing brace/ScoliBalance treatment.  Our hope is that patients will support each other as they move along their individual journeys. Learn more about ScoliConnect here.

Above all, let’s all come together as a community to support those affected by scoliosis this month and always.
