The Impact of Pregnancy on Women with Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis: A Scoping Review

By Rose Marchese – Head of Education & Research, Physiotherapist

This year’s SOSORT was held in Melbourne and ScoliCare was the proud host with Dr. Jeb McAviney co-chairing the event with Dr. Fabio Zaina, Chair of the Scientific Committee. ScoliCare staff presented on numerous occasions, with two of the key papers due for publication shortly.

The Impact of Pregnancy on Women with Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis: A Scoping Review

The abstract for this study was presented at SOSORT 2023 by Dr. Jean Thereoux from Murdoch University. For this scoping review Dr. Jeb McAviney (CEO, ScoliCare) and Rose Marchese (Head of Education and Research) joined a team of researchers from Murdoch University and Macquarie University to review the available literature on women living with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis during or after pregnancy. This paper is due for publication shortly in the European Journal of Physical Rehabilitation Medicine – stay tuned for results!

In the meantime this team has already started undertaking a further investigation of the impact of pregnancy on AIS and vice versa. A qualitative study using one-on-interviews of women is underway to explore this relationship, which is giving these women the opportunity to share their story in a meaningful way.

Current knowledge on the different characteristics of back pain in adults with and without Scoliosis: A systematic review
The abstract for this study was also presented at SOSORT this year by Rose Marchese from ScoliCare. This time Rose and Dr. Jeb McAviney teamed up Dr. Fabio Zaina and other researchers from ISICO in Milan, Italy, to investigate the current literature on back pain in adults with and without scoliosis. This study is due for publication shortly in the Journal of Clinical Medicine special edition titled ‘Spine Rehabilitation in 2022 and Beyond” with lead Guest Editor Dr. Deed Harrison.

The results of this study are very interesting in that there seems to be some clinical differences in presentation of low back pain in patients with and without scoliosis. We will keep you posted once it’s published!
