Improvement of a Severe Post-Traumatic De Novo Degenerative Scoliosis in an Older Female Using a 3D Custom Brace
At 88 years old, the patient presented to the ScoliCare Clinic with a post-traumatic de novo degenerative scoliosis related to spinal trauma many years earlier. She was experiencing back pain and progressive postural changes, including right coronal and sagittal imbalance, pelvic obliquity, and waist asymmetry.
X-rays confirmed a left lumbar degenerative scoliosis with the apex at L2. Given the unstable nature of the curve and associated postural imbalance, the patient was prescribed a 3D custom-designed rigid scoliosis brace for part-time wear (6–8 hours per day), supported by the ScoliBalance® exercise program.
Curve Stabilization: After 3 years and 4 months of part-time brace wear, the curve remained stable at 40° in-brace and 41° out of brace.
Postural Stability: After 4 years and 9 months of treatment, the patient’s posture remained stable with no further curve progression.
Improved Quality of Life: The patient maintained improved spinal alignment and functional stability from age 88 through to 93.
