Presentations at SOSORT/SpineWeek 2023

For the first time SOSORT will be part of Spineweek – a joint meeting of spine societies from all around the world that happens every four years. It’s also the first time that SOSORT is on in Australia! As the local host, the ScoliCare team is excited to be supporting SOSORT and we are also thrilled to be presenting several research projects at the event.

ScoliCare’s research team Dr. Jeb McAviney (CEO), Rose Marchese (Head of Education and Research), and Dr. Benjamin Brown (Research Consultant) has been busy behind the scenes preparing the abstracts for this year’s SOSORT in Melbourne 1-3 May.

Differences in Low Back Pain in Adults With and Without Scoliosis: A Systematic Review

For this study, our research team has joined forces with the researchers at ISICO (in Italy) to find out more about low back pain in adults with scoliosis. This systematic review is aimed at better understanding the differences in low back pain between adults with and without scoliosis. This was presented by Rose Marchese in Melbourne on the 1st May 2023.

The Impact of Pregnancy on Women with Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis: A Systematic Literature Review

The impact of scoliosis on pregnancy outcomes is still relatively unknown. Our team joined forces with staff at Murdoch University to better understand the influence that being pregnant has on patient outcomes in those previously diagnosed with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. This abstract was be presented by our colleague from Murdoch University, Dr. Jean Theroux with this paper being nominated for a SOSORT award! Presented on Tuesday morning 2nd May!

Compliance Strategies in the Use of ScoliBrace for Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis

We know that bracing can be effective for the treatment of scoliosis in many patients. The tricky part is making sure that patients are compliant. Even the most effective brace is not going to work if the patient doesn’t wear it! This is a particular challenge in the treatment of adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis. So, how do we get the patient to wear their brace?

Well, we know that bracing is affected by:

  • Comfort and appearance
  • Psychology of the patient
  • Age at the time of bracing
  • Brace wear and prescription
  • Feedback regarding brace wear.

We are always trying to find ways to help the staff at ScoliCare to support patients. So, we sent out a survey to our staff and ScoliBrace Providers worldwide to find out about the challenges they face with compliance, as well as the strategies that they find effective.

The abstract for this paper was submitted to SOSORT and was an ePoster!

Finally, our Head of Education and Research has just finished her thesis looking at the implementation of scoliosis specific exercise by therapists worldwide. She completed a mixed methods study including a survey of therapists worldwide, looking at how therapists were working with adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis, and then interviews of these therapists to find out the factors influencing their treatment. She presented the results of part two of this study on Monday 1st May at SOSORT.
