Reduction of Moderate Thoracolumbar Scoliosis Using ScoliBrace® and ScoliBalance®

At age 14, the patient presented to the ScoliCare clinic with a 34° left thoracolumbar scoliosis. She was an active teen who enjoyed participating in gymnastics, but had been experiencing ongoing lower back and shoulder blade pain. For the previous year, she had been undergoing physiotherapy for this pain. On examination, there were visible distortions to the patient’s posture – specifically right coronal imbalance (lean/shift) and a loss of thoracic kyphosis.

Her scoliosis had been diagnosed several months earlier by an orthopaedic surgeon, who advised surgery despite her curve falling within the 20–45° range recommended for conservative treatment under SOSORT and SRS guidelines. The patient was a Risser 3 at the time of presentation, indicating that there was still remaining growth.

She was prescribed full-time ScoliBrace® treatment for around 2 years, or until her growth had stopped. This was coupled with the ScoliBalance® physiotherapeutic scoliosis-specific exercise (PSSE) program.

Results

Early Improvement: After 5 months of treatment, her curve reduced from 34° to 14° (Cobb) out of brace, a 20° (59%) reduction.

Postural Correction: Improvement in spinal balance and posture was observed.

Long-Term Outcome: At 2 years, her curve had stabilised at 16° out of brace.

Her scoliosis is now considered low risk for progression, and she continues with regular monitoring and supportive
care.

NB: Results vary from case to case. Our commitment is to recommend the most appropriate treatment based on the patient’s individual case.
