Frequently Asked Questions About Becoming a Patient
What profession are your practitioners?
Our practitioners are known as ‘Scoliosis Clinicians’. They come from a range of spinal related clinical backgrounds including chiropractic, osteopathy and orthotics/prosthetics.
All have completed postgraduate studies in the conservative management of scoliosis, and are highly trained and experienced in working with patients with scoliosis and hyperkyphosis. This ensures a high level of knowledge and professionalism in the field. You might like to look up more information on your clinician.
Do I need a referral?
You do not need a referral to make an appointment with ScoliCare.
If you do have a referral though, please bring it along with you to the initial consulation.
Are you an NDIS provider?
Unfortunately ScoliCare is not an NDIS registered provider. Some patients are able to access funding through NDIS, however, their scoliosis or hyperkyphosis is usually in addition to other pre-existing conditions.
It is best to speak to your NDIS contact to find out further information about this.
What are your treatment options?
At ScoliCare, our focus is primarily on non-surgical treatment options for both scoliosis and hyperkyphosis. Our main goal is to help our patients find the correct treatment options to help them live fuller, healthier lives without surgical intervention where possible.
After a thorough assessment, our clinicians will discuss your treatment options and management plan in detail, offering a tailored approach to suit your needs. Non-surgical options available include:
- Custom 3D bracing for scoliosis and hyperkyphosis
- Specific exercise rehabilitation
We acknowledge that each patient case is unique. There may be some cases where monitoring or surgical opinion may be more appropriate. Hence we tailor our treatment to the individual’s needs after a thorough initial assessment has been conducted.
Will I need X-rays?
There is a significant amount of information that can be obtained via the history and physical examination.
However, to truly understand what is going on with the spine and how it is responding to treatment, X-rays will be required at certain intervals in the treatment schedule. The only way to accurately diagnosis and measure a scoliosis, and to monitor its progress, is with X-rays.
Wherever possible, low dose X-ray or scoliosis ultrasound is recommended to limit a patient’s lifetime exposure.
Are you a surgical clinic or do you work with surgeons?
We are a non-surgical clinic, however we do co-manage some cases with surgeons.
If the clinician determines a consult with a surgeon is appropriate, then they will discuss this with you during your appointment.
How do I know if ScoliCare is right for me?
When selecting a clinic for scoliosis or hyperkyphosis care, it’s important that you choose the care and support that’s right for you.
ScoliCare offers a highly qualified team of clinicians and rehabilitation therapists delivering evidence based 3D custom bracing and specific rehabilitation care.
Treatment recommendations are made following the SOSORT guidelines and we also work together with health professionals in all fields who may be involved in your care, to help achieve the best possible results.
