Interview with Scoliosis Rehabilitation Provider Erin Bryant

Erin Bryant is one of ScoliCare’s Rehabilitation Providers and works with scoliosis patients on a daily basis.

Can you describe the types of scoliosis patients you see in your clinic?

I see all types of scoliosis and hyperkyphosis curves.  We see juvenile, adolescent, and adult patients with varying levels of pain and severity of curves.  Spines can range from single to triple curves and have different postural effects that will change the way it affects the treatment.  Each and every case is unique and we look to give them the best outcome possible regardless of their starting point.

Can you describe common challenges faced by patients with scoliosis and how you help patients to overcome these challenges?

One of the common challenges is usually wearing the brace for as many hours as recommended.  This is especially difficult for those who struggle with wearing the brace in public.  I try to help put the time in perspective and show that the more they are compliant in the beginning, the less they have to wear the brace in the future.  Determination is key and the life-changing results can only happen with consistency and time. It helps that we take an in brace X-ray after 30 days to see exactly what the brace is doing.  Once the results are shown and a patient can see the brace working it is much easier to keep compliance.

Why did you decide to work in the area of scoliosis?

After working with my husband, Dr. T, for 20 years and seeing how the latest technology for scoliosis bracing was changing the lives of our patients,  it was an obvious next step to incorporate ScoliBalance, our physiotherapeutic scoliosis specific exercise program, to help boost results even more.  I have a background in Exercise Science and Physiology and have always had a love of biomechanics.  As a former gymnast I always loved coaching and helping others learn, this is a rewarding way to share my knowledge and expertise and create a better quality of life for our patients.  I also love educating and teaching the why behind the protocols and helping patients feel empowered knowing exactly what they have and how to help self-correct.
