What is kyphosis?
Kyphosis symptoms
Symptoms of Kyphosis may include:
- Poor posture with a hunchback or a hump appearance of the back
- Back pain
- Muscle fatigue
- Stiffness in the back
If left untreated, Kyphosis can lead to loss of sensation, loss of bowel or bladder control, heart and lung problems.
Causes of kyphosis
The causes of Kyphosis may include:
– Osteoporosis
– Low bone density
– Disc degeneration
– Cancer
– Spinal infections
– Neuromuscular conditions such as cerebral palsy
– Chronic diseases such as arthritis and osteoporosis
– Brittle Bone Disease
– Spina Bifida
Types of kyphosis
There are three main types of kyphosis.
Postural kyphosis
Postural Kyphosis is the most common type of kyphosis which usually appears during adolescence. Poor posture and a weakening of the muscles and ligaments cause Postural Kyphosis.
Scheuermann’s hyperkyphosis
Scheuermann’s Hyperkyphosis appears during adolescence and is a structural deformity of the vertebrae.
Congenital kyphosis
Congenital Kyphosis is the abnormal development of the vertebrae during the baby’s development before birth.
