What is kyphosis?

Kyphosis is a deformity of the spine which leads to a hump in the middle of the back. Kyphosis can be treated with a specific exercise program if detected early. If the Kyphosis is large, a custom made brace or surgery may be recommended. We ensure each patient is expertly assessed and given the best options for care.

Kyphosis symptoms

Symptoms of Kyphosis may include:

  • Poor posture with a hunchback or a hump appearance of the back
  • Back pain
  • Muscle fatigue
  • Stiffness in the back

If left untreated, Kyphosis can lead to loss of sensation, loss of bowel or bladder control, heart and lung problems.

Causes of kyphosis

The causes of Kyphosis may include:

– Osteoporosis
– Low bone density
– Disc degeneration
– Cancer
– Spinal infections
– Neuromuscular conditions such as cerebral palsy
– Chronic diseases such as arthritis and osteoporosis
– Brittle Bone Disease
– Spina Bifida

Types of kyphosis

There are three main types of kyphosis.

Postural kyphosis

Postural Kyphosis is the most common type of kyphosis which usually appears during adolescence. Poor posture and a weakening of the muscles and ligaments cause Postural Kyphosis.

Scheuermann’s hyperkyphosis

Scheuermann’s Hyperkyphosis appears during adolescence and is a structural deformity of the vertebrae.

Congenital kyphosis

Congenital Kyphosis is the abnormal development of the vertebrae during the baby’s development before birth.

How is kyphosis treated?

In the early stages, Kyphosis (Hyperkyphosis) can be treated with exercise. If the Kyphosis progresses to a certain degree, a brace will need to be worn to stop progression and to try to correct the curve. Surgery will be recommended when it the kyphosis progresses beyond the range that can be helped with bracing and exercise.

Depending on the type of kyphosis exercise there are a range of specific exercises that may be helpful. can Depending on if the kyphosis is postural or a structural kyphosis like Scheuermann’s hyperkyphosis exercise has varying effects. If the kyphosis is postural exercise can be very effective at improving the posture and reducing the kyphotic angulation.
