CASE STUDY #1:
Correction of a 33° Thoracolumbar Scoliosis with ScoliBrace and ScoliBalance
At age 13, the patient presented at the ScoliCare clinic following a diagnosis of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). She was experiencing mild back pain and noticed asymmetry in her posture.
Active in sports—ballet, dance, and netball—four times a week, her X-rays revealed a 33° left thoracolumbar scoliosis with a high risk of progression. She was prescribed a full-time ScoliBrace protocol combined with the ScoliBalance rehabilitation program.
Results
- In-Brace Correction: One month after bracing, her scoliosis reduced significantly from 33° to 13° (61% reduction) on the in-brace X-ray.
- Long-Term Results: After completing treatment, out-of-brace X-rays showed a further reduction of the curve to 6°, a 27° (82%) Cobb angle reduction overall.
- Improved Function and Pain Relief: Her posture and pain greatly improved, and she is now pain-free, continuing her sports activities without discomfort.
CASE STUDY #2:
Managing Adult De-Novo Degenerative Scoliosis and Hyperkyphosis with ScoliBrace
At 78 years old, the patient visited the ScoliCare clinic after a recent diagnosis of Adult De-Novo Degenerative Scoliosis and Hyperkyphosis. She had been experiencing constant pain in her left ribs, functional decline, and friends were noticing a rapid deterioration in her posture.
An earlier X-ray revealed a hyperkyphosis measurement of 83° with a 21° scoliosis. Within just two months, her hyperkyphosis progressed to 95°, a 12° increase in that short time without treatment. The patient was prescribed a part-time ScoliBrace treatment plan to manage the progression and symptoms.
Results
- Scoliosis Stabilized: After 5 years of bracing, her scoliosis remains stable at 21°, with no further progression*.
- Hyperkyphosis Reduced: Her hyperkyphosis reduced from 95° to 85°, halting the rapid progression.
- Improved Function and Comfort: The patient experienced a significant reduction in pain, noticeable improvements in posture, and increased ability to stand for extended periods. She’s now able to return to her favorite activities, including gardening.
*Note that Adult Degenerative Scoliosis typically progresses at an average of 3 degrees per year (1).
